Biometric Authentication - Voice

Voice biometric authentication is the use of the voice pattern to verify the identity of the individual.  It is fast becoming a widely deployed form of biometric authentication.  Why?

As the table at the beginning of the Biometric Authentication section of this website, a table was displayed giving high level comparisons of the different biometric authentication technologies.  In the table, was a rating called the Equal Error Rate.  This is the error rate occurring when the decision threshold of a system is set so that the proportion of false rejections will be approximately equal to the proportion of false acceptances. It is one of the best methods of determining the efficacy of the biometric method.

Note that the equal error rate for voice was less than 1%. Also note that the Failure to Enrol Rate was 2%.  This makes voice recognition biometric authentication one of the best methods for doing authentication (in low to medium risk situations).  The uniqueness of the voice as compared to digital fingerprints and iris scans is not as accurate.  However, in low to medium risk situations, the risk is acceptable.

The cost of deploying voice biometric authentication cost is also very low.  It is quite common now to see voice recognition software being used in call centers.  The customer's registration process for using their voice only requires them to say a few numbers and/or words.  The next time they call in, they simply have to repeat the numbers and/or words and the software matches them up against their registration recordings. Often the voice recognition also asks the speaker to provide a password verbally in addition to their voice recognition in order to increase the likelihood that the speaker on the end of the phone is who they really are.

A  word of warning about the use of any biometric.  What happens if the voice pattern is captured and used by criminals?  What recourse does the user have to protect their digital biometric?  They cannot change their voice.

While the voice and other biometric vendors proclaim their security, time has shown that criminals will find ways to overcome the system security.  What legal and protective resources does the user have for pieces of themselves which are digitized?

Recommended voice vendor is Nuance.
